Description

MANUKA 400+ MGO ™ NECTAR HONEY (even 608,1 mg MGO / kg)

Where does Manuka Honey come from?

Manuka honeys, compared to other European and tropical honeys, are primarily of indigenous origin. They arise only in a few areas of New Zealand that are a natural refuge for rare shrubs of the genus Leptospermum scoparium.

Manuka honey research

The 2018 research on the content of methylglyoxal in jars of Manuka MGO ™ Honey turned out to be extremely optimistic. They show that the actual content of methylglyoxal in Manuka honeys can be up to 200 mg higher than declared by the manufacturer.

What is Manuka Honey?

In 2013, with the participation of the New Zealand government, a working group was established to define the criteria for qualifying apiculture products known as Manuka honeys. According to a study from July 2014, Manuka honeys are homogeneous honeys that were produced only in New Zealand, during the period of flowering Manuka shrubs, which are mainly produced from the nectar of Leptospermum scoparium species. These honeys should additionally have the following features: appropriate conductivity range, exceptional taste defined as mineral, slightly bitter; strongly aromatic fragrance with noticeable notes of moist earth and heather; the presence of pollen characteristic of Manuka shrubs and components, including: methylglyoxal (MGO ™) (Science and characteristing Manuka honey - Current and future science to support a definition. Ministry for Primary Industries, New Zealand Government. July 2014).

What is MGO ™?

MGO ™ is an abbreviation of Methylglyoxal - a natural substance recognized by scientists as a characteristic ingredient of Manuka honeys, which, due to its high content, differ from other honeys available on the market. The research on the composition of Manuka honeys and methylglyoxal was conducted by prof. Thomas Henle from the Dresden University of Technology - one of the world's leading food researchers. Conclusions of prof. Henle was supported by New Zealand scientists, including: prof. Molan, an earlier precursor of Manuka honey research. This is how the method of measuring and determining the quality of Manuka honeys - MGO ™ was created, which is objective and repeatable.

Manuka Health New Zealand is a precursor and scientific leader of the MGO ™ method and a leading exporter of high-quality Manuka honey. It was the first to introduce the commercial quality determination of Manuka honeys using the methylglyoxal method - MGO ™ (since 2007) and has had a significant impact on scientific and official work related to the quality of Manuka honeys in New Zealand and the world (www.manukahealth.co.nz).
